Chapter 2: Mercedes

I know when Derrick calls me and wants to come over, he needs a favor. It’s not money this time because that company he works for pays him loads of cash. He studied his ass off to finish at the top of his class and now it’s paying off. But I thought he would marry his college sweet heart, and now he’s living with a stripper. He’s happy and is having a baby so there is no need for me to act ugly. Strippers need love too and I like any woman that will keep my big brother out of trouble.

I open the door for him and he walks into my apartment with a gloomy look on his face. His head is down. “Come in. What is it this time? I know it has to do with that boss of yours.” He brings in his bike and leaves it at the door. I wave for him to sit. He sits and I bring him a beer. He drinks and then he looks up at me with those unhappy dark brown eyes.

I move to the sofa, “What’s the matter big brother, do you need a hug?”

“No,” he says his voice low. “I need you to get inside of a cake and jump out of it tomorrow.” I look at him as if he’s an alien who shows up at my door, saying, “Come with me.”

“No fucking way. Is that what you came here for?”

“Peaches refuses to subject any more of her friends to the likes of Porter St. Clair.”

“Porter St. Clair the billionaire, Porter St. Clair who owns hotels all over the world, Porter St. Clair who is a notorious womanizer? The Porter St. Clair whom you told me about, and is your boss?”

“Well, he won’t be for long if I don’t come through, and I have tried every woman I know and they refused me. You are the only one I have left. You would be perfect.”

“Do I look like a hooker? I graduate high school early, graduate from college early, with good grades at the top of my class, I might add. Get into medical school and now you want me, your sister, to dance naked in front of a bunch of drunken white men. I don’t think so,” I said standing, shaking my head, and giving an around the world snap with my fingers.

“It’s not a hooker. You’re not selling anything.” He’s raising his voice to get his point across. “You’re a stripper. Strippers don’t do anything but dance.”

“You want me to dance?”

“All those dancing lessons mama gave you should count for something, Mercedes.”

“They were ballet lessons and that’s not the same thing. And it wasn’t to prepare me to be a stripper. But to be a refined young lady.” His eyes glossed over and he rolled his eyes.

“All you have to do is step out of the cake and shake your ass. Guys say you have a nice ass, and you do, so that shouldn’t be a problem.
